Before the awfulness of the year 2020 washed off the face of the earth, mainland Luzon was quite literally washed off when typhoon Ulysses (internationally known as Vamco) hit on the late hours of November 12th. With damages reaching to P2.5 billion and 67 casualties, it was the most devastating typhoon since Ondoy, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the third disaster during the typhoon season, yet it was the one the country was not prepared for; Super Typhoon Rolly (Goni) hit a couple of weeks before Ulysses and people from everywhere braced for allegedly the strongest typhoon of the year. However, it was barely felt in most areas and people and authorities shrugged off the subsequent advisories, leading to devastating consequences. Thankfully, in the area that I was in, the interruption on internet connection was the biggest manifestation of the typhoon. We all woke up to the howling wind and a dreadful feeling when our Facebook timelines were filled with people trapped on the top of their roofs, waiting hopelessly for rescuers from the night before.
