This one I have to give credit to 2 Broke Girls for introducing me ("crock monster"). Basically it's a fancy grilled cheese sandwich with surprisingly hard to find ingredients. Most of all, it features one of Auguste Escoffier's mother sauces, the béchamel.
Not gonna lie, my sauce seems bland and off-putting. I think I added a little too much water because I thought the milk was drying up. Additionally, flour is always hard to deal with without exact precision.
Ingredients
2 cups milk
Gruyere cheese
ham
sandwich bread
3 tbsp flour
dijon mustard
nutmeg, butter, bay leaf
egg (for croque madame)
Worcestershire sauce
Steps
Heat 2 cups milk with bay leaf.
On a separate pan, melt butter and add 3 tbsp flour. Slowly pour in milk until it thickens. Season with salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce and nutmeg. While still hot, melt in parmesan and Gruyere cheese. This is your béchamel.
Spread béchamel sauce on the bread. Add in ham, dijon mustard on top of the ham, and cheese.
Optionally, fry sandwich on butter.
On top of the sandwich, pour the béchamel sauce. Add more cheese if you like.
Cover with foil and bake for 5 to 7 minutes at 200 F.
